Day 2169 - Samurai Auto Service - 04.29.17

Today my wife attended a music conference for work.  I had to pick her up mid day and I used Google Maps for directions.  Unfortunately they lead me to the wrong place.  I ended up near this auto service place in Atwater Village.  Luckily I had my camera with me to take a photo of this mural.  this is something I saw today.

This afternoon we had to run to the deli to pick up some Romano cheese.  This is the catering van in the back.  This is something I saw today.

Day 2162 - RC Dance Ballet Gala - 04.22.17

Tonight was the Ballet Gala for RC Dance Center.  We were at the Colony Theater in Burbank, which was a new venue.  This is my daughter and her friends in a ballet called "Mi Gitana."  This is something I saw today.

Day 2161 - Burroughs Spring Dance Show - 04.21.17

This evening was the Spring dance show at my daughter's high school.  I left work a little early and then got caught in horrible traffic.  I thought for a while I wasn't going to make it in time.  Apparently there was someone threatening to jump from an overpass and so the freeway was shut down.  Luckily things were resolved and things got moving again and I made it just in time.  This is a photo of my daughter dancing in one of the numbers.  This is something I saw today.

Day 2160 - Web Of Spider-Man #16 - 04.20.17

Web of Spider-Man is another series that I collected on an off.  I have lots of holes in the collection.  This is one I picked up for a buck at Wonder-Con.  This is something I saw today.

Day 2159 - Daredevil #282 - 04.19.17

This looks like a great issue.  It not only has Mephisto, but the Silver Surfer, who I love.  This is something I saw today.

Day 2158 - Daredevil #279 - 04.18.17

This is an issue of Daredevil with Mephisto.  I love that Mephisto exists in the Marvel universe.  Somewhere I have a marvel collectors card with Mephisto.  I loved that card back in the day.  Mephisto is sitting on a throne and I thought it was pretty cool.  This is something I saw today.

Day 2157 - Daredevil #276 - 04.17.17

This is an issue of Daredevil that I picked up recently.  In the corner you can see that the crossover even that was taking place during the issue was "Acts of Vengeance" which I remember.  Daredevil was one of those comics I would pick up inconsistently back in the day.  I guess I wasn't reading Daredevil during Acts of Vengeance because I didn't have this issue.  This is something I saw today.

Day 2156 - Daredevil #273 - 04.16.17

There is something a little weird about this Daredevil cover.  Perhaps it is the proportions on the villain or maybe it is just the pose.  This is one of the recent dollar comics.  I picked up a handful of Daredevil issues that I didn't have.  This is something I saw today.

Day 2155 - The Band "Northern Lights" - 04.15.17

I don't even remember when I picked this record up.  It was in the last year of so I believe because it was in among a bunch of records from this past year that I have yet to listen to and file away.  I listened to it finally this week and really loved it.  I am always sort of amazed at the magic of discovering new music that has been locked away on the grooves of a record.  It is an interesting thought that it has been sitting there all this time, all these years just waiting to be enjoyed.  This week is was unleashed.  This is something I saw today.

Day 2154 - Iron Man #235 - 04.14.17

Today is another Iron Man comic.  I really like the way this photograph turned out.  This is something I saw today.

Day 2152 - Marvel Double Feature #8 Featuring Captain America and Iron Man - 04.12.17

This Marvel Double Feature is another one of the comics from Wonder-Con.  This new job is going to be long hours which means coming up with easy picture ideas in the morning.  That in turn means that I may be resorting to the stack of Wonder-Con comics frequently.  This is something I saw today.

Day 2150 - Sunset Over Manhattan Beach - 04.10.17

Today I started my new job at Manhattan Beach Studios.  It was a long day and I left as the sun was setting.  I took this photo on top of the parking garage.  This is something I saw today.

Day 2149 - Caged Bird - 04.09.17

Today we went to the Los Angeles Zoo.  The zoo is such a strange place in that it is sort of a celebration of animals, while on the other hand it does seem sort of cruel.  You can't escape the fact that all of these animals are caged.  I thought this photo of the cage in front of this stunning bird summed up that dichotomy.  This is something I saw today

Day 2148 - Dark Knight Statue - 04.08.17

Today my wife and her niece went on the Warner Bros. tour.  There is a room with a bunch of Batman vehicles as well as this statue of the Dark Knight.  I was very happy with the way this photo came out.  In the afternoon we went to China town.  It was a good day.  This is something I saw today.

Day 2147 - Mr. A - 04.07.17

I drove down a different road on the way to work this morning.  I figured it was my last time driving through Hollywood for a while and so I should explore.  I found the Mr. A Street art by the artist Andre Saraiva.  This is something I saw today.

Day 2146 - "What's So Bad About Feeling Good" and "Never A Dull Moment" - 04.06.17

Tonight I saw a couple forgotten comedies at the New Beverly.  The first film was "What's So Bad About Feeling Good?" which starred Mary Tyler Moore.  This film was a revelation in my opinion.  It was an hysterical satire that seemed way ahead of its time.  It was a bomb when it was released, but its social commentary was so biting and relevant not only to then, but to now.  I think that it's skewering of both the establishment and the 60's counterculture was perhaps too much for audiences at the time.  In fact I read a review from the time and it's biggest complaint was that the review felt that the film didn't get hippies and the counter culture.  The funny thing is that the film was released in 1967, the year of the summer of love.  At the time everything seemed great and it was not a popular thought to be look critically at the weaknesses of the movement, but the thing is this film was 100% on point.  Looking through our lens from the future it is amazing how on point it was.  Sadly this film has not been release on home video and so I can't share it with friends and family.  If you ever have an opportunity to see it, do see it.  "Never A Dull Moment" was a Walt Disney Dick Van Dyke flick.  It was okay and had it's moments, but was not nearly as great as the first film.  The evening was also great because some folks from work joined me and one last get together before leaving this week.  This will also probably be the last time I go to the New Beverly for a while as I start my new job in Manhattan Beach next week.  This is something I saw today.

Day 2145 - Cranes at Sunset - 04.05.17

This week is my final week working for The Third Floor, which means this is going to the last week I can see beautiful sunsets like this over Hollywood.  These construction cranes at sunset was something I saw today.

Day 2144 - Escape From New York and Big Trouble In Little China - 04.04.17

Today was a glorious day.  There was a double feature of "Escape From New York" and "Big Trouble In Little China" at the New Beverly.  Tickets for the show sold out the moment they went on sale and I missed out on that.  So my plan was to show up early in hopes of still getting in.  I showed up around 5:15.  There was already a few people in line, but everything turned out great because I got in. 

Both films rank among my favorites.  I watch Big Trouble probably once a year.  In fact I had recently started watching it with my wife just a month or two ago after I discovered that she had never watched the movie through.  We still need to finish watching that so I'll probably watch it again real soon.  This is something I saw today.

Day 2142 - Madame Xanadu #1 - 04.02.17

This is one of the dollar comics I picked up at Wonder-Con yesterday.  It has a short story drawn by Brian Bolland in the back and is one of his early pieces for DC Comics, which I think is pretty cool.  This is something I saw today.

Day 2141 - Wonder-Con Escalator - 04.01.17

Today my wife and I ventured to Anaheim for Wonder-Con.  We love Wonder-Con and we had a great time.  We spent the morning looking at and buying artwork.  We had a nice lunch at the Marriot next door and then returned to search for comics.  We ended up spending over an hour at one booth digging through their dollar boxes.  We gathered a huge stack of dollar comics and then brought those to the car.  We spent a little while longer seeing what was left of the floor and then left.  It was a nice low pressure day.  This is a view of one of the escalators and was something I saw today.

Day 2140 - Ray Conniff and His Orchestra "S'Wonderful" - 03.31.17

Recently I picked up a Ray Conniff record that had songs from Saturday Night Fever and I loved it so much that it lead me down a Ray Conniff rabbit hole.  So when I saw 4-5 Ray Conniff records at Goodwill recently, I picked those up as well.  This is one of those records.  This is something I saw today.

Day 2139 - Tears For Fears "The Hurting" - 03.30.17

I stayed home from work today.  Actually, I stayed home yesterday as well.   I have just been exhausted and needed the rest.  This morning I took down this Tears For Fears record off the shelf for a photo.  There is a chance I may have take a photo of this record in the past, but I am resisting the urge to search my own blog to check.  Either way this is something I saw today.

Day 2138 - The Prids "Love Zero" - 03.29.17

The Prids is a band I saw a few years ago at Safari Sams.  I think they were one of the opening bands for The Supersuckers.  I could be wrong on that, but I think it was The Superuckers.  I bought this record at that show.  The other day a track from this record came up on my iPod, which reminded me of them.  I had sort of forgotten, but really loved the track.  So today I pulled the record off the shelf for a photo.  I see that I had put the set list in the record.  This is something I saw today.

Day 2137 - Heroes Shed No Tears and Eastern Condors - 03.28.17

This evening was a Hong Kong action double feature.  This morning I said to my wife that 90's version of me would never imagine that 20 years later I would be sitting in Quentin Tarantino's theater watching films by John Woo and Sammo Hung.  Both films were fun, but Eastern Condors was by far the better of the two film.  It was fun and per usual with Sammo films and the action was fast and furious.  The choreography and stunts were inventive and the production value was top notch.  There was a lot of gun play, but everything culminated in a big James Bond-esque set and a ton of hand to hand martial arts action.  It was great.  This was something I saw today.

Day 2136 - Traffic Accident - 03.27.17

I was glad I had my camera with me in the car this morning.  I was snapping photos of billboards and store fronts and then I come to Cahuenga and Santa Monica and this gnarly scene. Not only it the truck on its side, but you'll notice that the car completely took out the lamp post.  It is laying on the telephone/power line above.  This is something I saw today.

Day 2135 - Pee Wee's Place - 03.26.17

This afternoon, my wife and I had a nice quiet afternoon reading mostly.  I took this photo of our Pee Wee Herman shrine this while we were lazily laying around.  This is something I saw today.

Day 2134 - Tomb Of Dracula Essentials Vol. 3 - 03.25.17

This afternoon I started reading volume 3 of The Tomb Of Dracula Essentials having just finished volume 2.  It kicks off great with issue 50 that has a Silver Surfer crossover.  This should keep me company at nights for the next few months.  This is something I saw today.

Day 2133 - Labelle "Phoenix" - 03.24.17

I have been listening to some 60's and 70's soul recently with Marvin Gaye and The Impressions.  That made me think of featuring a record from that era today.  So I pulled one of my Labelle records off the shelf.  This is Phoenix and something I saw today.

Day 2132 - Buddhas In The Morning - 03.23.17

Since I will be changing jobs soon, I began taking things home from my office.  My Buddha Homer on a doughnut was one of those things and I put him between my two blue Buddha heads at home.  This is something I saw today.

Day 2131 - America Has Always Been Great - 03.22.17

This wall along Cahuenga has been great over the past few months since the election in terms of great street art.  Recently these posters went up.  They are just to the right of the Trump Putin piece that I have shown in the past.  I finally stopped today to really take in all of these American icons.  Today I also accepted a new job and so in a couple weeks I won't be passing this wall every morning any more.  I will miss it.  This is something I saw today.
